Der Autor analysiert das Edward'sche Zeitalter in Bezug auf Musik anhand von fünf Novellen aus dieser Zeit, die Musik zum Thema haben. Er kommt zu dem Schluss, dass die Zeit durch die aufkommende Technik, z.B. mechanische Klaviere aber auch das Grammophon, die Rezeption von Musik beeinflusste. Er empfindet dies alles als Verschwendung von Lärm. Die erwähnten Novellen sind u.a. von E. M. Forster: Howards end (1910, über Beethovens op. 67), C. Mackenzie: Sinister street (1910, auch hier spielt op. 67 eine entscheidende Rolle). – Fotokopie.
