Originalabstract des Autors: Drawing on a wealth of hitherto untapped archival sources, my dissertation chronicles the reception given the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) by German political parties from the bloody French Revolution to the peaceful but no less momentous East German Revolution of 1989. I examine how political leaders have interpreted Beethoven's music in order to justify their ideologies and actions, thereby transforming Beethoven and his art into powerful ideological symbolis. – My methodology does not depend on determining the extent to which music expresses personal or societal values. The heart of this study focuses on what happened to Beethoven's music after his death, and of the political charadter of these interpretations there can be no doubt. Perceived in literal terms and used to proclaim dogma, Beethoven's works have been rendered inspirational elements of many political liturgies. – Starting with teh composer's own extreme reactions to the political developments of his time, I analyze scholary works, newspaper articles, political speeches, school textbooks, concert programs, radio transmissions, feature films and television broadcasts to show that German ideologues have subsequently projected their own extremist views onto Beethoven's music, hoping to persuade others to interpret it similarly. Thus has the "meaning of Beethoven" oscillated through two centuries of unparalleled political turmoil and change.
